I’ve been a road biker and triathlete since I was 17, when I quit smoking weed long enough to save up for a second hand cannondale road bike. Road biking is a great way to get around quickly, albeit with the anger of a million motorists upon you even if you are law abiding. But it’s pretty unentertaining unless you are really hammering.

I bought a skateboard today, and it is amazingly fun and so far has been way easier than I remember it being, While my daughter napped I got comfortable going over bumps, adjusting my feet, turning, and just tooling around on my street. Tonight I headed over to a bigger open lot to pretty much do the same but also try lifting the front wheels.

So it dawned on me, it’s way slower than biking but going fast and being on the edge is very fun, turning tightly, being very involved in most movements. On the way to and form the lot I was trying to go fast but the method is ultimately self limiting.

I imagine it’s pretty akin to going from a highway cruiser car with a good amount of HP to a smaller, more nimble sports car with the top down. It’s noisier, not really quicker, but the sensation and connectedness makes it feel fast enough.

And for your time, the slow(ish) car I’m hoping to go buy this Friday to drive fast...

Congrats on picking up a board and just going for it. I got into skating for a bit, albeit on a longboard (i can hear the crowd’s groans from here). Got decent enough to commute to school in my hilly college town. Great exercise, took a few really good falls and hung it up.

Thanks, I’m pretty pumped about it at this point.

I went for a cruiser board, shaped and sized more like a traditional board but wider and with bigger softer wheels like from a longboard. The dude at the shop said it’s a board I could use for just about anything to see what I like and don’t like. Mostly I want to have the option to Ollie(once I figure it out) and maybe ride a little at the park when no one else is around.

I decided that since I’m old(31) I’m gonna wear a helmet, it’s dorky, but I’d rather not break my head.
